Hang yourself, finish selectively
Many DIYers hang successfully and hire finishing for skim and texture. Labor for Level 5 under gloss paint often costs less than redoing a blotchy DIY job. Still estimate sheets with the drywall calculator so material bids stay honest.
DIY-friendly vs hire-friendly
Understand targets in finish levels explained before you quote a finisher.
- DIY OK: closets, garages, Level 3–4 under flat/eggshell paint
- Hire recommended: open living rooms with grazing light, Level 5, heavy texture match
- Hire recommended: large ceilings, stairwells, historic plaster blend-ins
- Hire or specialist: fire-rated assemblies and soundboard systems that need inspection
What to ask a finisher
If you DIY mud: follow tape and mud and sanding tips, then prime.
- Finish level included and paint sheen assumed
- Who sands and who primes
- Number of coats and dry time between visits
- Responsibility for screw pops after heat season
Hybrid approach
Hang and tape embeds yourself; hire skim and texture. Or hire the whole finish after you hang. Full sequence: project roadmap.
