Fire-rated assemblies

Attached garages often require Type X drywall on walls and ceilings that face living space. Sheet quantity is unchanged — thickness and fire rating are separate line items at the store.

Workshop and insulated garages

If you insulated stud bays before drywall, your sheet count is the same as an uninsulated wall. Add 10–12% waste for around windows, man doors, and corner beads.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets for a two-car garage?

A 24×24 garage with 8 ft walls has roughly 768 sq ft of wall area before openings. After a double garage door deduction and 10% waste, expect about 24–28 sheets of 4×8.

Is garage drywall different from interior?

Fire-rated Type X drywall is often required on garage walls adjoining living space. Count sheets the same way — choose thickness per local code.

Should I include the garage ceiling?

Many DIYers drywall walls only. If you are finishing the ceiling, enable ceiling area or use the ceiling calculator for length × width overhead.
